Ciranda Achieves Highest Level of Palm Sustainability Certification from the RSPO

Ciranda is proud to be the first major ingredient supplier in the United States to offer 100 percent certified sustainable Identity Preserved (IP) Organic palm oil following the recent certification by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO).

Traceability Ensures Economic, Social and Environmental Sustainability

The RSPO-IP certification guarantees the traceability of each lot of palm oil back to the field of origin, and is the most stringent of four certifications offered by the RSPO. Ciranda’s palm oil is produced by Brazil-based Agropalma. In addition to carrying the RSPO certification, Agropalma is certified by IBD Brazil under its Organic and EcoSocial program. The company also recently received the highest rating of all palm oil producers for palm oil sustainability by the environmental group Greenpeace.

Palm fruit oil is a rich source of natural antioxidants, which act as scavengers of damaging oxygen free radicals and are believed to play a protective role in cellular aging, atherosclerosis and cancer.

“Clinically, vitamin E is best thought of as a vitamin complex, consisting of two therapeutic groups of compounds with vitamin E activity – tocopherols and tocotrienols. Each group comprises four different isomers, alpha, beta, gamma and delta, which all have different biological activities and potential therapeutic benefits. Tocopherols are present in most vegetable oils and are more common in the diet than tocotrienols, which are found at relatively high concentrations in oil extracted from the fruit of the palm tree. Tocotrienols are shown to be more potent, therapeutically, than tocopherols. For example, the antioxidant capabilities of tocotrienols are 40-50 times that of tocopherols. In addition, other isomers are more potent than alpha tocopherol. Both gamma tocopherol and alpha tocotrienol may be more potent antioxidants than alpha tocopherols.”

SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION

Ciranda’s partners and producers work with farmers to replace slash and burn practices with sustained yield agroforestry methods. Palmfruit™ products are produced in a sustainable organic system that is restoring forests near the mouth of the Amazon River in Brazil.

 

These organic palm products are certified by IBD Brazil as NOP and EU Organic, as well as EcoSocial. EcoSocial certification assures the producer practices fair relations in trading socially and environmentally certified products. It also verifies that the producer invests in programs of human and social development for employees, farmers and neighborhood communities, and also in programs of environmental conservation.

PROCESSING

Ciranda’s Palmfruit™ oils are pressed from the palm fruit clusters and processed using only steam and pressure. No chemical solvents are used in any stage of production. The oil is refined to yield Palm Oil RBD (refined, bleached, deodorized), which can be further fractionated using temperature-induced crystallization and separation to obtain solid (stearin) and liquid (olein) fractions. Ciranda’s organic shortening is made from a blend of these two fractions.

 

 

OUR PRODUCTS

Palm fruit oil has naturally high levels of antioxidants (tocopherols and tocotrienols) which resist oxidation and rancidity, giving extended shelf life.

 

PALMFRUIT™ OIL RBD is used as a frying oil, in baking, cooking, ice creams, soaps and cosmetics. Its neutral flavor, color and aroma allow ingredients to shine through

 

PALMFRUIT™ OIL EXTRA VIRGIN (RED PALM) has a buttery and slightly peppery taste. It is a popular ingredient in tropical ethnic dishes and has been used as a nutritional supplement for generations.

 

PALMFRUIT™ OLEIN is used as frying oil for such items as corn and potato chips, snack foods and instant noodles. As a deep frying medium, Palmfruit™ Olein can be re-used more often than other oils due to its high temperature stability.

 

PALMFRUIT™ TRANS-FAT FREE SHORTENING light flaky texture to a wide variety of baked goods such as crackers, cookies, biscuits, pie and tart shells, breads and more. It is ideal for use as a high quality creaming agent for spreads such as sandwich cookie fillings. Palmfruit™ shortening is solid at room temperature, has a neutral taste, and is produced without hydrogenation and trans-fatty acids, making it a very useful ingredient in organic food processing.

 

PALMFRUIT™ STEARIN is a higher melting point palm fraction used in coatings in the confectionery and margarine industry. Palm stearin prevents peanut butter from separating and is also used in the production of soaps and cosmetics.

 

 

NUTRITIONAL BENEFITS

Physically and chemically different from the highly saturated palm kernel oil, palm fruit products contain a balance of polyunsaturated, monounsaturated and saturated fatty acids and essential substances such as linoleic acid, tocopherols and tocotrienols, which act as natural anti-oxidants against damaging free-radicals.
