Nutrition Business Journal Article

Ever wonder where the term "Peanut Gallery" comes from? The term became popular in the late 19th century and referred to the rear or uppermost seats in a theater. People seated in such a gallery were able to throw peanuts, a common food at theaters, at those seated below them. It also applied to the first row of seats in a movie theater, for the occupants of those seats could throw peanuts at the stage, stating their displeasure with the performance.

Bulk Room Production
Our bulk room is a new addition to the company. The room was completed and put into action just a year ago. The room is currently overseen by, Scott Owens.
The bulk room provided us with a new level of automation and our main roaster called the Proctor Roaster, contains a state-of-the-art touch screen control panel. This panel helps us to control the temperature, combustion zones, exhaust, and cooler fans. We are also able to control belt speeds and temperature making it easier to process nuts and seeds, thus improving company efficiencies. For example, we have been able to reduce the roasting time by 1 hour per 2 tons of product.
Fault Screen: The automated touch panel also allows us to understand if there is an issue with the roaster. A fault screen shows our workers what they need to do to correct any problems during the roasting process. This helps us to reduce any downtime on the equipment.
In addition, there is a temperature read out that shows a process graph displaying what temperature has been set by our worker, in relationship to what the roaster’s current temperature actually is.
Allergen control: In the new bulk room, we are now able to roast 2 different products at the same time in 2 different roasters, also improving efficiencies. While sesame and sunflower seeds share a roaster, they do not share the same holding bins. Likewise, cashew and almonds share a roaster but each have its own holding bins reducing cross contamination. All equipment is cleaned between roasting nut and seed products. The mill, lines, metal detectors, pumps and roasters are blown out. This means that an air gun is used blowing moisture free compressed air through the equipment.
We are very excited about our new bulk room and what this means for us in providing high quality products for ingredients and co-ops. Should you have any questions about our roasters, you are always invited to contact us.
